Man Utd backed to sign £53.4million ‘top’ star in January

Man Utd are leading the Premier League table at the moment but a defeat on Sunday against arch rivals Liverpool would change the situation.

The title is going to be tightly contested this term and the Red Devils, who have already dropped out of the Champions League, must focus on improving the squad in January to retain their advantage in the league.

Transfer: Man Utd told signing £130,000-a-week ‘complete’ star this month would ensure title

In such a scenario, transfer expert David Webb has backed Man Utd to sign French international Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig this month.

Webb has tracked the Les Bleus central defender for years and believes that he has developed into a ‘top’ player’ who has what it takes to improve the backline at Old Trafford. He told Sky Sports:

“It’s an interesting one because both teams are looking to compete on all fronts, especially with Manchester United’s recent surge up the league and Liverpool’s defensive problems at the moment.”

“A particular player (I would recommend) that springs to mind is Dayot Upamecano; one I’ve known for quite a long time. He broke onto the scene when he was signed from Valencia to Red Bull Salzburg.”

Last month, we also emphasized that Man United need to sort their defensive concerns by signing a leader and therefore, they should move to lure Upamecano from the Bundesliga side.

The 22-year-old’s current contract with Leipzig will expire in 2023 and next summer, clubs would be able to sign him for a fee of 45 million euros (clause). To sign him in January, Man Utd would need to splash a fee (Sport Bild) of around 60 million euros (£53.4million).

Upamecano has consistently improved and after an impressive last campaign, he was rewarded with a place in the senior national side last year.

As far as this season is concerned, with him leading the defense, Nagelsmann’s side have concede the fewest number of goals in the German league thus far. Leipzig knocked the Old Trafford club out of the European Cup and will face Liverpool in the Round of 16.

Moreover, they are just two points Bundesliga leaders and reigning champions Bayern Munich in the table. Therefore, the manager would not want to lose his prized asset in the middle of the campaign.

However, ideally, Man Utd should move now because in the summer, the competition could be very high to activate his relatively low release clause of 45 million euros. In your view, should Solskjaer splash £53.4million to sign Dayot Upamecano in January?
