Manchester United have confirmed Fred as their latest summer signing and the Brazilian midfielder says he “cannot wait to get started”.
Signed from Shakhtar Donetsk, the 25-year-old joins a packed midfield containing Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay. Manager Jose Mourinho wanted to strengthen his options in the engine room and has done well to land Fred’s signature ahead of other clubs.
The combative midfielder will provide more protection to the defence and will be a steely influence in the middle of the park. He could help Pogba be more creative in possession and should help United control the play more than they did last season.
Fred hasn’t come cheap, with reports suggesting the Red Devils paid over £50m to sign him this summer, but he should be effective nevertheless. He said in his first interview: “This is the biggest club in the world and I am delighted to be a part of this amazing team.
“To work with Jose Mourinho, who has won so many trophies in his time as a coach, is an opportunity not to be missed. I cannot wait to get started and to meet my new team-mates.
“I would like to thank everyone at Shakhtar Donetsk for everything they have done for me over the past five years. This is a very exciting time for me with my focus now fully on the World Cup with Brazil.”
After finishing 19 points behind Manchester City in the Premier League last season, United have taken positive steps to challenge the Sky Blues in the 2018/19 title race. They’ve strengthen the defence with FC Porto’s right-back Diogo Dalot and now have Fred from Shakhtar to bolster the midfield.
