Manchester United are favorites to sign Joao Neves from Benfica, who want to agree a new deal with the midfielder.
As per O Jogo (news image provided below), Man Utd are in first place to sign Neves, who is also wanted by Man City, Barca, NUFC and Premier League leaders, Liverpool.
The 19-year-old star’s current contract has a release clause of 120 million euros and he earns a salary of around £520,000 a year.
According to O Jogo, the reigning Portuguese champions are ready to increase the player’s salary by offering him a new deal.
Moreover, they also wish to raise the valuation of the exit clause from 120 million euros to 150 million euros.
It is stated that the eagles expect millionaire bids for Joao Neves and the 150 million euros clause will put them in a better position to negotiate the transfer.
The winter transfer window will open next week and the ‘greed surrounding the midfielder is at an all-time high’.
Therefore, to ward off interest from Man Utd and other suitors, Benfica want to announce the new contract at the ‘time of the reopening of the transfer market, in January’.
Neves mainly plays in the defensive midfield / deep lying playmaker role. In that position, Ten Hag needs a long term replacement for veteran, Casemiro, who is past his prime and currently injured.
