Man United have made contact to sign £25million play breaker – Report

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United have spent a lot of cash to strengthen their backline in the last few seasons, now, they should move to hire a top quality defensive midfielder.

If reports in the media are anything to go by then the Red Devils are interested in hiring the services of Tottenham’s Harry Winks.

Transfer: Man United lead to agree signing of £43million star – Report

According to an exclusive story covered by Stretty News, Man Utd have made contact to sign the play breaker, who could cost around £25million in the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old holding midfield star’s current contract with the north Londoners will expire in 2024 but the news source have mentioned that Levy is open to offloading him.

Winks has played over 170 games for Spurs, 109 in the Premier League, so he has got ample experience under his belt. However, he had a season to forget last time out.

In the 2019-20 campaign, he did start 26 games in the Premier League, however, last season, he only started 9 games and made 15 appearances in the league. Hojbjerg was mainly preferred in the DM role.

Man Utd do not have a top holding midfield star in the squad. The likes of Pogba, McTominay and Fred are central midfielders who are not renowned for tackling or breaking play.

We do have a natural defensive midfielder in the form of Nemanja Matic but the 32-year-old (will turn 33 in August) mainly warmed the bench and only started 12 PL fixtures under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last term. The Serbian international is too slow and definitely past his best.

Therefore, I do not think that we should replace one bench warmer by signing another bench warmer as Winks has not been good enough. Instead Man Utd should lure a specialist play breaker, who would be able to provide a solid cover in front of the backline. What do you think?
