Manchester United were already enduring a woeful campaign this season and now like a boil on top of a sore, they have struck with several injury problems.
Ruben Amorim was demanding time on the training pitch to implement his style of football and he got a full week of training before the Tottenham Hotspur fixture.
However, it ended up being a curse, as several players picked up injury problems in training. Amad Diallo’s season is over due to a serious ankle problem, while Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Toby Collyer also sustained injuries.
So, Amorim had to call several youth players in the squad to face Tottenham yesterday. In the meantime, the Red Devils have started looking at options in the market to bolster the squad next summer to help Amorim turn the situation around.
Spanish outlet, Sport, state that Man Utd want to strengthen the No.10 position and have made contact over a deal to sign RB Leipzig star, Xavi Simons.
The 21-year-old was at the Bundesliga side on loan from Paris Saint-Germain but they made the move permanent in the winter window. However, Die Roten Bullen are already prepared to let him leave next summer if they receive an offer of around £83.2m.
Manchester City and Liverpool are also keen on purchasing the youngster, while Arne Slot knows the player very closely as they are compatriots. Therefore, Amorim’s side will have to overcome stiff competition to seal the deal.
Xavi enjoyed a stellar campaign last term, making 25 goal contributions in all competitions. Now, he has scored five goals and registered four assists in 14 Bundesliga appearances.
The Dutchman was out with an ankle issue from October to January and has been in fine form after returning.
Simons, who was brilliant at the Euros last year, is a CAM by traits but is also comfortable playing in either flank. Hence, he would be an ideal candidate to reinforce Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.
