Man United confident to sign deal with Tottenham for £40million-rated defender

According to the Evening Standard, Manchester United are hoping to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld for £40m this summer, with the Belgian international’s future uncertain. United manager Jose Mourinho could be losing three defenders in the coming weeks and wants a stellar replacement brought in.

Alderweireld joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and has gone on to make over 100 appearances in all competitions. The 29-year-old has been out of favour this season, however, making only 14 Premier League appearances, and could be on his way out if he’s deemed surplus to requirements.

The centre-back has only one year left on his deal with Spurs and has rejected an improved basic salary to extend his stay in London. United are hoping to capitalise and sign a stellar defender to bolster their backline next season, with Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Victor Lindelof potentially on their way out.

As Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has preferred Davinson Sanchez – who recently signed a contract extension – and Jan Vertonghen at the back, Alderweireld could be allowed to leave. Spurs won’t want to risk losing the £40m defender for free next summer, so United have a great chance to procure his signature.

  1. Be as confident as you like, you won’t get him for £40m.
With the competition for his signature, and his proven quality in this
over priced market, much of it for mediocre players, expect to pay £50m.
I’d rather he didn’t go at all ..but he wants a lot more money so that’s that.

  2. 40M….no way…worth a lot more than that in today’s transfer market. I believe almost every Spurs fan wants Toby to stay.
