As we head into the final days of the summer transfer window, Manchester United still lack a defensively solid midfielder capable of bringing the ball forward from deep areas.
Sofyan Amrabat is still waiting for a new club and is understood to have already agreed personal terms with United. Fiorentina are also waiting to resolve the future of their star midfielder and have sidelined him from first-team fixtures and training until after the transfer deadline.
And yet, there has been no formal offer from the English club, who appear more focused on signing a new striker and left-back.
However, Italian sources – as they’ve been all summer – are optimistic United will make a move. Reliable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed the Premier League giants “continue to insist” on closing the deal for the 27-year-old, who has been a target of Erik ten Hag for some time.
Another source, Quotidiano report that Fiorentina are “confidentially” awaiting a move from the Red Devils. They add the English outfit have “promised” to make an offer and the delay to follow up on that could be a tactic to lower La Viola’s asking price in the dying embers of the window.
In the event the Serie A outfit fail to strike an agreement for their prized asset this summer, they could lose him for nothing 12 months later upon the expiration of his contract in Florence.
For now, it’s believed United’s offer won’t exceed 23 million euros (£19.7m). Whether Fiorentina’s hierarchy accepts such an offer for the former Hellas Verona player who they signed for €20m remains unclear.
Regardless, this seems like a perfect situation for United to strike the hammer and test the Italian side’s resolve. Considering Amrabat’s quality and the glaring issues of Ten Hag’s midfield, it’ll be a shame if they don’t even take a shot.
