Manchester United’s situation currently might be dire to say the least but that isn’t stopping them from setting themselves very lofty ambitions for the near future.

The Red Devils are probably banking on the fact that their historic pull will still help them sign world-class players who in turn can help the sporting project.

Ruben Amorim has been optimistic of the fact that he can turn the situation around at Old Trafford and believes making sales will help him sign players come the summer.

The truth of the matter however is that Man Utd need to find something about their project to convince high potential players to join them, especially with competition from all around.

As per The Daily Mail, Man Utd are interested in signing talented Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.

The player is valued at around £70million and also has interest from the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

Why would he want to struggle at Old Trafford when he can move to Madrid or Merseyside?

That said, there is another way of looking at it from Wharton’s perspective. If he was to move to Anfield or the Bernabeu, he would be just another player among the numerous stars that the club have at their disposal. However, a move to Manchester comes with the prospect of him spearheading a project.

Wharton is the kind of player any manager would love to have. Smart, technically proficient, excellent on the ball and a generally intelligent footballer, the English midfielder can control a midfielder for the next decade if not more and also has excellent defensive attributes for him to function as a play-breaker.

Predominantly a 6, Wharton isn’t going to offer much going forward but pairing him with someone like Kobbie Mainoo who offers a lot in that sense could be a tactic that Amorim can deploy.

That said, Man Utd have a very good play-breaker in Manuel Ugarte and Wharton is unlikely to come at a decent price.

Man Utd have so many gaping holes in the squad and spending £70million on a position for which they already have a decent player with massive potential might just not be the play given the current state of their project.

Even if Casemiro was offloaded, the Red Devils will be better off bringing a backup for Ugarte at a decent price.

United never seem to run the show in a way most people would expect and anything is possible with them. It remains to be seen if they make an offer to sign Wharton from the Eagles and let’s wait and see how it plays out.
