Man Utd are scrambling in search of alternatives to preferred midfield target, Manuel Ugarte, this summer. The Red Devils have been unable to reach an agreement with PSG regarding a move for the Uruguayan international.
It is clear that the Old Trafford-based club needs an upgrade/option to replace Casemiro in midfield. The ex-Real Madrid superstar has shown signs of ageing in the past 12 months, struggling to control the field like he used to in his prime.
Transfer: Ten Hag ‘closes’ in on signing with club to ‘deviate’ from £42.9m price – Report
Going into another season without a reliable defensive midfielder could hurt Erik ten Hag’s chances of winning trophies with the Red Devils. Man Utd are rightfully searching for Ugarte alternatives to bring in should the need arise.
One player they have identified is Atalanta star Ederson. According to Give Me Sport, Man Utd are lining up a move for the 25-year-old defensive midfielder and could try to bring him to Old Trafford this summer. However, there is a potential hurdle.
As per a previous report from GMS, the £45m rated Brazilian is open to joining Man Utd’s arch-rivals – Liverpool. The Reds were linked with a transfer for Ederson around a month ago although talks have gone silent in recent weeks.
It is not going to be easy for any player to replace Casemiro. Yes, he might not have performed as well as expected in a Man Utd jersey but let’s not forget that the Brazilian superstar had an outstanding first season at Old Trafford.
Ideally, the Red Devils might like to bring in someone like Ederson or Ugarte but also keep Casemiro at the club. Who better to learn the tricks of the trade than a five-time Champions League winner? However, that is almost impossible considering the 32-year-old earns a frankly ridiculous £450,000 per week at Man Utd.
Getting the Brazilian off our wage books and replacing him with a younger alternative seems to be the plan this summer and it makes a lot of sense. Of all the options available, let’s see who Man Utd land with not much time left in the transfer window.
