Man Utd made £54million move to sign star

Douglas Costa Juventus

Manchester United need major reinforcements in the upcoming winter transfer window and a top quality Brazilian attacker is linked with them.

On December 18, 2018, The Sun exclusively reported that before leaving the Old Trafford club, Jose Mourinho found out about Woodward’s plan to sign Juventus attacker Douglas Costa.

More recently, reports in Italy (Rai Sport via CalcioMercato)  have claimed that Man Utd made a move of €60million (i.e. £54million) for the Brazilian playmaker but the Old Lady rejected the offer.

The 28-year-old attacker was a key player in Allegri’s side in the last campaign, however, things have drastically changed for him since the arrival of Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo from European Champions Real Madrid in the summer.

The Samba star has only managed to start four times in all competitions this season, once in the Champions League and three times in the Italian Serie A.

Costa has got raw pace, a powerful left foot and he is mostly deployed on the left flank.

At Manchester United, French star Anthony Martial is the first choice left winger and he is in top form at the moment. The ex Monaco attacker has already netted 8 goals in 10 league starts so far this season.

United did under-perform and played not so attacking and boring football under Jose Mourinho but at the weekend, they were at their best offensive form against Cardiff City under Solskjaer. So, the interim boss must get time to utilize the attacking players at his disposal before making any transfer decision.

It will be intriguing to see if Solskjaer can revive Alexis Sanchez, who was world class at the Emirates but since moving to Old Trafford, he has been highly inconsistent. The Chilean is injured at the moment. If the manager can get the best out of his attackers, then the club would not really need to sign a new playmaker.
