It has been almost three years since then-interim manager Ralf Rangnick made a statement that has since gone on to be proven as a prophecy. Here is exactly what the German coach said:

“You don’t even need glasses to see and analyze where the problems are. Now it’s about how do we solve them? It’s not enough to do some minor amendments – cosmetic things. In medicine you would say that this is an operation of the open heart. If this happens and everyone has realized that this has to happen and if people want to work together then it makes sense and I believe it doesn’t take two or three years to change those things. This can happen within one year.”

Three years since, those words ring true even as of today. Manchester United have in the meantime gone from Rangnick to Erik ten Hag to Ruud van Nistelrooy (interim) and now Ruben Amorim and they don’t seem one bit closer to solving the issue. If anything, they have taken a few steps in the backwards direction.

Now, the latest man tasked with performing this open heart surgery is Ruben Amorim and to be fair to the Portuguese tactician, he has gone about his decisions in his short stint as Man Utd manager with the same kind of ruthless that a doctor would have when removing a tumor.

Amorim hasn’t hesitated before making a decision to let go of players like Marcus Rashford and Antony making it very clear that he would only keep players who show that they deserve to play for a club of Man Utd’s stature.

The ex-Sporting CP manager will have to make signings to help him out and it looks like they could finally move on a long-term interest of theirs. Man Utd were keen on signing Crystal Palace midfield star Adam Wharton who has been valued at around £100m not so long ago.

Wharton has missed a significant chunk of this season with a groin injury that required surgery and recently made the return, playing a few minutes incidentally against Man Utd.

If he can stay fit and showcase his ability between now and the end of the season, a number of big clubs will be eyeing his signature for next season.

As per Team Talk, Manchester United are plotting a move to sign the talented Englishman next summer. In many ways, one can make a case that despite playing for the Three Lions, Wharton has the technical ability of a Spanish midfielder.

If Man Utd sign Wharton, pairing him with Manuel Ugarte in midfield could be a devastating combination. Let’s wait and see how the 21-year-old plays after injury and if he does enough to convince the Red Devils to sign him next summer. Only time will tell how it plays out.
