Manchester United are currently 6th in the Premier League having conceded 40 goals in 29 fixtures. Even Aston Villa, currently 9th, have conceded 40 goals so far this term.
Over the years, the Red Devils have signed central defenders like Bailly, Lindelof, Maguire (record fee paid for defender) and Raphael Varane. Still, things have been shaky at the back.
News – Man United ready to sign £58.7million creative star – Report
The Old Trafford outfit have experienced defenders but what they really lack is a specialist play breaker to provide cover in front of the back four.
According to reports (Diario do Fla), Man Utd are prepared to agree a fee of over £32million (200 million Brazilian Lira) to hire the services of Flamengo play breaker, Joao Gomes.
The youngster’s current deal with the South American club will expire in 2025, he is highly rated defensive midfielder and can also play effectively in the central defense.
Top teams like Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are miles ahead of the rest because they have quality and depth in every position and a top class defensive midfielder. The Blues have Kante, the Reds have Fabinho and the Sky Blues have Rodri.
However, Man Utd’s only natural defensive midfielder is Nemanja Matic, whose best days are long gone and the Serbian mainly warms the bench. The veteran will turn 34 in August and he must be replaced in the next transfer window.
Joao Gomes is 21 and has played over 60 games for the senior Flamengo side. Still, I think that he still needs experience to shine. Man Utd do not need a rookie, instead they must sign a proven quality play breaker to improve the squad. What do you think?
