At this point, a book can be written about Man Utd’s transfer targets this summer and the transfer window will be over by the time we finish reading it. About half the football world has been linked with a move to the Red Devils but only two players have been signed.

Okay, okay, we’ll stop exaggerating. The truth is that despite the number of players Man Utd have been linked with this summer, they have only signed Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro of which the latter has already suffered an injury and is ruled out for three months.

The midfield is an area that the Red Devils want to reinforce this summer. Although their transfer target since the beginning of the summer has been Manuel Ugarte of PSG, we covered a story around 10 days ago revealing that Man Utd had identified a £29.5m move for Youssouf Fofana.

Fofana has been AC Milan’s preferred transfer target for this summer but the Italian giants have not yet finalised a deal for him. As per La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Man Utd are looking to take this opportunity and hijack the transfer of the Frenchman.

Whilst the Rossoneri wait for exits before signing Fofana, the player might be ready to agree to a move to Old Trafford who have as ambitious a project as Milan. The 25-year-old needs to make a decision on his future with the new season closing in.

Fofana would bring an incredible physicality to midfield, something that the Man Utd lack at the moment. However, he is not the natural replacement to Casemiro which is what the Red Devils need to be focussing on this summer.

Man Utd would be better off focussing their efforts on someone like Ugarte for the defensive midfield position. The club is also pushing to secure the signature of Adrien Rabiot on a free transfer and spending money on Fofana would not be a wise choice currently.

The coming days will give us a clearer picture of whether this story holds much substance. Fofana shouldn’t be a priority this summer but let’s see what the club thinks.
