According to Sky Sports, Manchester United’s deal with Shakhtar Donetsk for Fred will be confirmed this week, with the midfielder’s work permit expected to go through. Fred was announced a United signing earlier in June after the Red Devils agreed a £50m deal for the 25-year-old’s signature, but they stated a ‘further announcement will be made in due course’.
The midfielder is currently in Brazil’s 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup this summer and was on the bench for their opening game against Switzerland. Fred is coming off the back of an impressive season in the Ukraine and will improve the United side when he does eventually make the switch. The combative Brazilian will join Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba.
Fred made 155 appearances in all competitions for Shakhtar after joining from Internacional in 2013. He’s a defensive midfielder who will nullify the opposition and also drive with the ball from deep. Manager Jose Mourinho could utilise a three-man midfield next season to get the best from Pogba, with Matic and Fred given deep-lying roles to allow the Frenchman to play in a more advanced position.
After capturing Diogo Dalot from FC Porto this summer, Fred should be the second signing confirmed this week.
