According to Il Mattino, Manchester United want to ‘secure a transfer’ for Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam this summer, as manager Jose Mourinho seeks out a new left-back to replace Ashley Young and Luke Shaw.
Ghoulam joined Napoli from AS Saint-Etienne in 2014 and has made 153 appearances for the Serie A outfit. The 27-year-old has spent most of this season sidelined with injury, however, making only 11 league appearances due to a cruciate ligament rupture and fractured kneecap.
However, United are still keen on his signature and could pay the required £44m to land his signature. Ghoulam’s double injury season could mean suitors pull out of the race to sign him this summer, boosting United’s chances. Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were previously linked with the Algerian international, but United have a greater need for the left-back.
With Ashley Young turning 33 in July and being out of contract next year, United need a long-term replacement in the defence. Luke Shaw should have been that player, but he’s fallen out with Mourinho this season and could be on the move this summer as a result. Ghoulam would compete with Young for a starting place and could be a mainstay in the future.
