England national team manager Gareth Southgate has gone on to state that Phil Jones is Manchester United’s best defender at the moment.
Phil Jones is undoubtedly a very talented defender but his impact for Manchester United has been limited over the years owing to a number of persistent injuries the 25-year-old has suffered during his time at Old Trafford so far.
Jones has made a very strong start under Jose Mourinho this season though and it has to be said that his presence at the heart of the backline has been one of the main reasons as to why the Red Devils have managed three consecutive clean sheets this season.
Playing alongside an established player such as Eric Bailly has certainly helped Jones and now England national team manager Gareth Southgate has gone on to lavish the ex-Blackburn Rovers man with high praise by stating that he is the best defender United have at the moment.
Southgate said, “Not just this season, in terms of when I’ve been looking at him, but there was a long period last season where I think he’s been the best defender.
“He’s got very good composure on the ball, he’s got the pace and the reading of the game, he’s aggressive in his defending – which I like – and I think he’s got fantastic experience although he’s still only relatively young.
“He organises well, he competes well, so I’m delighted that we’ve been able to involve him this time and it was clear the other night [against Malta] what he brings to the team.”
