£300k-a-week until 2023: Man United hope to agree deal for 27-year-old amid Real Madrid interest

Manchester United are desperate to ward off Real Madrid’s interest as they look to complete a deal for a player both sides were heavily involved with back in 2015.

Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea is reportedly in line for a new contract worth £300k-per-week, making him the joint-highest earner with Paul Pogba. The 27-year-old’s current deal expires in 2019, but United have an option for a one-year extension.

Signed from Atletico Madrid back in 2011, De Gea’s gone on to make 296 appearances for Manchester United, keeping 111 clean sheets, as well as becoming one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. The reported deal could see him at Old Trafford until 2023, although there’s been no confirmation yet.

Real Madrid were minutes away from procuring his signature in 2015, but the deal collapsed in the eleventh hour after the papers reportedly weren’t completed in time – blamed on a faulty fax machine.

The Spanish giants haven’t given up their pursuit for the shot-stopper, however, and could step up their interest this month or next summer. Manchester United are keen for De Gea to sign before the start of the 2018 Russian World Cup, giving them less than six months to come to an agreement.
