Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement to pursue the services of Benfica wonderkid Umaro Embalo. The 16-year-old has been monitored by United in recent months, and a deal has finally been struck for the January transfer window.
According to Portuguese outlet Record, the teenager forward will join the United academy in the New Year after the club finalised an agreement with the Primeira Liga champions. Jose Mourinho’s men had initially failed with a £4m move in the summer, but an improved offer has been accepted by the Portuguese giants.
Both Mourinho and super-agent Jorge Mendes are understood to have played a key role in recruiting Embalo, who has earned comparisons with former Benfica winger Angel di Maria. The 16-year-old has modelled his style of play on Di Maria – as he is left-footed and likes to operate on the right side of the attack.
The youngster has already had his taste of action in Manchester this season after he played against United in a 2-2 draw in the UEFA Youth League. Aside from his club exploits, Embalo has also impressed in the national setup, netting 15 goals in just 18 appearances for the Under-17 side.
