Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe has joined Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season, the Championship club confirmed. The 20-year-old can also play in midfield and is hoping he’ll get regular playing time for the promotion-hopefuls.
“I am delighted to be here. It’s an exciting time at this football club and everyone is pushing for promotion – that’s the big aim, you can feel that here. I am determined to help this club achieve its goal,” Tuanzebe said.
The England u21 international joined Manchester United at the age of eight, and has gone on to make eight appearances for the first-team. He’s featured three times for the Red Devils in all senior competitions this campaign.
Tuanzebe’s move to Aston Villa has been a long time coming, but United manager Jose Mourinho was unsure about letting him leave while Eric Bailly was injured.
The Portuguese coach was reticent to trim down his defensive options, but with the Ivorian international returning to the fold, Tuanzebe has been allowed to move for the season.
He’s played just a minute of Premier League football this season, coming off the bench against Everton on New Year’s day. The 20-year-old boasts Champions League experience too, briefly featured against CSKA Moscow in early December.
Tuanzebe has made over 30 appearances for the reserve side, while racking up 11 games for England at youth level. Aston Villa have stiff competition in the side, so a starting place isn’t guaranteed, but the hard work starts now.
