Manchester United are on alert after Stoke City forward Xherdan Shaqiri admitted to Sporx that he would prefer a return to the Premier League ahead of next season.
The 26-year-old suffered relegation to the Championship with the Potters and has been public in his desire to exit the Britannia Stadium as a result. United and Liverpool have been linked with the £12m-rated man. He said: “I want to stay in the Premier League, and you will find out my new club soon.”
Despite manager Jose Mourinho having Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata for attacking options, he appears keen to add another. Shaqiri’s low asking price might be the real reason why the United boss wants the Swiss international at Old Trafford, but it’s unlikely he would be anything other than a squad player.
The 26-year-old made 92 appearances for Stoke City in all competitions since joining the club from Inter Milan, scoring and creating 30 goals. Shaqiri has 21 goals in 74 games for the national team too. He scores and creates goals an equal amount and would offer a different dimension in attack from what United already possess.
Whether the Red Devils can beat Liverpool to Shaqiri’s signature this summer remains to be seen, however.
