Manchester United attacker ‘astonished’ as contract discussions reach a ‘stall’

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is said to be surprised with the club’s delay in offering him a new contract. The France international has been one of United’s top performers during the ongoing campaign, and this has been recognised with three Player of the Month awards.

According to RMC Sport, the 22-year-old had sent his representative to discuss a potential contract with United in December, but unfortunately, he found himself astonished with an empty-handed offer in return.

Jose Mourinho’s side have since pursued the signature of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in a swap agreement and the Chilean’s arrival has hampered Martial’s chances of starting on the left side of the attack.

Martial had found himself out-of-favour under Jose Mourinho during the backend of the previous campaign, but he managed to win over the Portuguese with a strong pre-season which has continued with regular goalscoring contributions this term.

The Frenchman is presently contracted at Old Trafford until the summer of 2019, and there is still plenty of time to find a resolution, with the club having the option of a 12-month extension clause.

Nevertheless, the club’s hierarchy must show their intent to keep a player of Martial’s calibre, who has the potential ability to be world-class, should he earn a regular run in his preferred position.

With Sanchez’s arrival, Martial has failed to build on his 11-goal tally for the season, and Mourinho may need to swap positions between his attackers with the former more than capable of performing – on the right with his vast experience.
