Manchester United blow as Chelsea could agree £55m deal for £75k-per-week star

According to the Mirror, Chelsea have entered the race for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld. The Blues could meet his £55m asking price this summer, snatching him off from the hands of Manchester United who were closing in on the £75k-per-week star.

Alderweireld joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and has gone on to make over 100 appearances in all competitions for the Lilywhites. The 29-year-old’s future is uncertain, however, as his contract expires in less than 18 months and he’s yet to agree terms on an extension.

The Mirror believe talks have stalled as the Belgian international wants to double his wages to sign a new deal, something Tottenham aren’t considering. As a result, the likes of Chelsea and United could capitalise.

With the futures of Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Chris Smalling uncertain, United manager Jose Mourinho is shopping for a replacement at the heart of the defence. Alderweireld has been on the Red Devils’ radar for some time, but Chelsea’s interest could throw a spanner in the works.

The Londoners are desperate for a central defender as David Luiz’s time at Stamford Bridge could be coming to an end at the end of the season. Gary Cahill is out of favour under head coach Antonio Conte too, so Chelsea will need at least one replacement this summer.

  1. What a load of rubbish! Spurs won’t sell him to a premiership rival even if he wanted to go to a team not making the top four, which he doesn’t! PSG are favourites, but there’s no guarantee he won’t stay at spurs.
