Manchester United have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit for Mesut Ozil, with the Arsenal and Germany playmaker to sign a new contract this month, reports The Sun.
The 29-year-old’s contract runs down in the summer, but there hadn’t been signs of an agreement near until now. Ozil and midfielder Jack Wilshere, who is also out of contract in the summer, are closing in on extensions in January, which is bad news for United.
Manager Jose Mourinho was reportedly keen to renew acquaintances with Ozil, the playmaker he worked with at Real Madrid, but the latest news from the Arsenal camp suggests Manchester United will miss out on procuring his signature.
Ozil has been an ever-present for the Gunners this season, scoring and creating nine goals in 18 Premier League appearances, but the club are struggling in the race for a top-four place. Arsenal are currently sixth in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of Liverpool and Chelsea who occupy the last two Champions League spots.
Manchester United could be losing Henrik Mkhitaryan to Arsenal, with an agreement near for Alexis Sanchez, and Ozil would have been a good replacement for the Armenian. However, it appears he will commit his future to the North Londoners.
