According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur are considering selling defender Toby Alderweireld this summer. The Belgian international, who joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015, has made over 100 appearances in all competitions and comes to the end of his four-year deal in 2019.
Alderweireld is currently on £75k-per-week and is believed to want a considerable increase in wages before he considers signing a new deal with Spurs. However, the lack of progress could force Tottenham into cashing in on him while he’s still got some value.
Manchester United could land the 28-year-old’s signature this summer as a result. The centre-back is currently worth around £50m and could be open to joining a side of the Red Devils’ standing. With manager Jose Mourinho falling out of love of Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof, a new defender looks to be coming in.
In addition to the aforementioned duo, United have a lot of options at the back, including Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Daley Blind, so there could more be a number of players offloaded in the summer. Alderweireld would be a regular in the starting lineup if he made the move to Old Trafford, so the future of existing players would be uncertain.
