According to Diario Gol, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is still keen on Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric and Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic and could make an approach this summer.

Following the Red Devils’ Champions League exit at the hands of Sevilla, Mourinho will strengthen the midfield to ensure they aren’t overrun in Europe again. Paul Pogba sat on the bench for an hour as United were outfought and outplayed by the La Liga side and the record signing’s future is uncertain.

Michael Carrick is retiring this summer to become a coach at the club, Marouane Fellaini is out of contract at the end of the season while Ander Herrera has been linked with a move to the Serie A. As a result, United need replacements in the engine room.

Modric has been a target for many years and Mourinho will be keen to renew acquaintances with the player he worked with at Real Madrid. The 32-year-old isn’t their only midfield target, however, with Croatian international teammate Rakitic also on their shortlist.

The playmaker could be available due to the stiff competition in the Barcelona side. Philippe Coutinho, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Paulinho could collectively keep Rakitic out of the side this season and next which may cause him to ponder his options away from the Camp Nou.
