Manchester United could reportedly trigger the release clause of Barcelona’s versatile midfielder Sergi Roberto. The Spaniard is unsettled at the Catalan giants amid their accelerated transfer activity in the final weeks of the transfer window.
Roberto, 25, had good success playing as a right-back under Luis Enrique last season – providing one goal and six assists across all competitions. Despite this, new boss Ernesto Valverde does not consider him as a regular in his starting lineup with new signing Nelson Semedo a certainty to start in defence.
According to Don Balon, Roberto is currently playing backup to the likes of Sergi Busquets, Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta in central midfield, and he could potentially push for a summer exit amid the impending signing of Paulinho from Guangzhou Evergrande.
Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho is also another who could seal a move to Camp Nou, and Don Balon cites that United will have a straight tussle with Juventus to lure the La Masia graduate.
Roberto currently has a £36m release clause in his contract, and this is well within the reach of United, who are on the lookout for a potential competitor at right-back. Antonio Valencia has owned the position in recent seasons, but Roberto could favour a switch to Old Trafford with the opportunity to cement as a regular in the long-term.
