Manchester United are reportedly close to reaching an agreement with David de Gea over a new long-term contract. The deal would make him the highest paid player in the world, thereby ending the never-ending speculation over his future.
According to Spanish outlet Marca, United have been in talks with the Spain international since the turn of the year and they have struck a deal which would earn him wages of around £385,000-a-week for the next five seasons. The news has supposedly come shortly after De Gea’s mistake in the 3-3 draw against Portugal after which he hit out at the critics in his home country.
De Gea has regularly been linked with Real Madrid since his failed move in the summer of 2015 and the new extension should end any question marks regarding his future at Old Trafford. The Spaniard has already made 315 appearances during his time at United and he now has the opportunity to become one of the true greats at the club whilst ending their title wait.
The Spaniard has been with United for the past seven seasons where he has kept over 100 clean sheets. He has been named as the club’s Player of the Year in four of the previous five campaigns and most-recently picked up his maiden Premier League Golden Boot accolade.
