Manchester United in advanced negotiations to sign Bernardo Silva- report

Manchester United have been linked with a whole host of players in the last few months, as the club look to go on another spending spree in the summer. Despite having spent more than £100 million on strengthening the midfield with players like Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan only last summer, the club have expressed an interest in signing Monaco midfielder Bernardo Silva. Latest reports (via The Sun) hint that the Red Devils are in advanced negotiations with the French club for the transfer of the 22-year-old.

Silva has become one of the top playmakers in Europe in a short span of time. His performances have been crucial in getting Monaco a lot of success this campaign. Apart from dominating the French Ligue 1, Monaco have also been able to secure a spot in the Champions League semi-final. Silva has scored eight goals and provided nine assists in all competitions for the club. United have been linked with forwards like Andrea Belotti and Antoine Griezmann over the last few weeks, but it appears that Silva may become the first signing of the summer.

After having recently done business with Monaco for the transfer of Anthony Martial, United have moved ahead of the queue to sign Silva. Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, and Real Madrid are thought to be some of the clubs interested in securing the playmaker’s services.

The transfer fee has been quoted at £42.5 million. Only a few weeks ago, Monaco’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev claimed that the player wanted to stay at Monaco. Yet, interest from a club like United will be hard to turn down for any player. Even though there are concerns about United’s participation in the Champions League next season, Silva is likely to look at the long-term prospects and opt for a move to Old Trafford.

The £42.5 million spent on Silva may be the start of an extravagant summer transfer spree. United have been linked with the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Andrea Belotti, with both players expected to cost in excess of £60 million. Following the long term injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the expected exit of Wayne Rooney, United would be in the market for two strikers.
