Manchester United are reportedly set to hold talks with Spanish duo Ander Herrera and Juan Mata over fresh contracts. The pair played an influential role under the Special One last season as the Red Devils celebrated a Europa League and EFL Cup double.
Both Mata and Herrera are contracted to United until the summer of 2018, but the club have the option of triggering the one-year extension in their respective contracts.
According to ESPN, the club are confident of securing long-term deals with the midfielders with Jose Mourinho looking to offer a strong challenge for the Premier League title this season.
Herrera joined the Mancunian giants from Athletic Bilbao under former boss Louis van Gaal, and he was more or less a fringe player until he secured a regular spot in midfield under the Special One.
The former Basque graduate has been linked with a potential move to Barcelona in recent weeks, but he is committed to United’s cause after enjoying a standout season which he was named as the club’s Player of the Season.
Meanwhile, Mata also played a meaningful role under Mourinho’s guidance last season despite initial doubts over a potential rift – in connection to the Spaniard’s time with the manager at former club Chelsea.
The 29-year-old notched 10 goals in 42 outings across all competitions for United last season, and he looks set to play a significant role once more, although there could be added competition from a summer signing.
Manchester United have signed the likes of Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic for a combined sum in excess of £135m, and the focus will now be on signing a new attacker before this month’s transfer deadline.
