‘Not Asensio’, Man United confident of signing this £27m-rated midfielder in January

Manchester United are prepared to lodge an approach to sign Real Madrid’s Mateo Kovacic next month. The Croatia international has been earmarked as a potential option to bolster the midfield department which could be without the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick next season.

According to Don Balon, United are looking into a deal for the former Inter Milan man, and are confident that a fee of around £27m would be sufficient to do business with the European champions.

Kovacic has not quite lived to his early expectations at the Bernabeu, and he has barely featured this campaign with the likes of Casemiro and Luka Modric being regulars at the heart of Los Blancos’ midfield.

Despite this, Kovacic has the attributes of being the perfect midfield player with the ability to keep the ball being one of his prime skills. United have yet to extend the contract of Fellaini beyond the end of the season, and it appears that the club are planning for his departure in advance.

Fellaini has been influential with his minimal influence in the starting lineup, but he has seemingly made his mind up for a fresh challenge with contractual negotiations having stalled since September.

Meanwhile, Carrick is likely to hang up his boots in the summer with just a solitary appearance for United this term. The ex-England international is currently stepping up his fitness after undergoing a heart procedure.
