Manchester United have confirmed that goalkeeper Joel Pereira has joined Portuguese outfit Vitoria Setubal on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old featured extensively for United during the recent pre-season of the United States but he has now been allowed to join the Primeira Liga outfit to earn valuable first-team experience.
With Pereira’s exit, summer signing Lee Grant is expected to assume the duties of the third-choice shot-stopper, though he should play back-up to David de Gea for the season opener, given Sergio Romero has yet to recover from a knee issue.
Mourinho has previously hailed Pereira as one of the best Portuguese goalkeeper of his generation and the youngster has since got his reward in the form of a new contract which only expires in the summer of 2021.
At present, Pereira has relative no chance of dislodging De Gea from the number one role but he could take up the deputy role in the coming years from Romero, who has regularly been associated with a United exit.
United have recently returned from their pre-season tour of the United States. They are now scheduled for a friendly at Bayern Munich this weekend before the Premier League curtain raiser against Leicester City.
