Official: Man Utd confirm departure, Mourinho hardly gave him a chance

Manchester United confirm Daley Blind has left the club to re-join Ajax this summer. The centre-back was hardly given a chance by Jose Mourinho and spent last season on the periphery. Blind was expected to depart Old Trafford after being used sparingly in 2017/18 and Ajax have opted to bring him back to the Johan Cruijff Arena as a result.

The 28-year-old joined United in 2014 and went on to make 141 appearances in all competitions, winning the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup during his time in England. He was more of a regular upon his initial arrival at Old Trafford, operating at left-back, centre-back and in midfield, but he fell out of favour under Mourinho.

Blind was signed by former United boss Louis van Gaal who had managed him during his stint in charge of the Netherlands national team, but Mourinho failed to get the best from the Dutchman on a regular basis. His exit this summer won’t come as a surprise after he made four Premier League starts last season, but he will be missed nevertheless.

The defender was composed in possession and tactically intelligent. He just never found his feet in England and couldn’t maintain high levels of performances over a full season. A fresh start elsewhere could be exactly what he needs.
