According to the Independent, Manchester United are keen to sign another key player from the Arsenal team – Mesut Ozil. Manager Jose Mourinho has been keen to renew acquaintances with the German international for some time, although excessive wage demands could prove a stumbling block.
Ozil, who is out of contract in the summer, is reportedly seeking around £300k-per-week from a suitor, a figure that would see him on par with United’s highest-earning duo Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba. The report says Ozil is no longer a transfer priority for the Red Devils, however.
The 29-year-old has been playing a move this season, scoring and creating 10 goals in 17 Premier League starts, while making 64 chances. Ozil has been an ever-present in the side, but he’s still yet to commit his future to the club which raises questions about his signature.
Mourinho and Ozil worked together at Real Madrid in the past, and the Portuguese coach has long praised the playmaker for his talents. United have been linked with the midfielder for many months this season, and the chance to sign such a coveted creative player for free in the summer is almost too good to be true.
Ozil is worth around £30m currently, and a bid matching that amount might get Arsenal’s attention. Unless the London club have been lining up a replacement, however, it’s unlikely they would entertain any more bids. Nevertheless, it doesn’t appear Mourinho is giving up just yet.
