According to Calciomercato, Manchester United could make a bid to sign Napoli forward Dries Mertens as his future is uncertain at the Stadio San Paolo.
The report says the Belgian international could leave for as little as £24.5m, as per his release clause, unless Napoli can get him to agree to a new deal without the clause attached. Mertens wants a raise on his £58k-per-week contract but the two parties have been unable to come to an agreement.
As a result, United could sign Mertens for a bargain price and would inherit an in-form forward boasting 21 goals in 41 games in all competitions this season. The 30-year-old joined Napoli from PSV Eindhoven in 2013 and has gone on to contribute 147 goals in 227 games for the Serie A giants.
Jose Mourinho’s side have enough attacking options, however, with Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata in the squad, but Mertens is too good a player to pass up on.
The Napoli forward has netted 67 Serie A goals in the last five seasons and could be one to watch during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Manchester United might have to act fast to land Mertens as contract talks with Napoli are expected in the coming weeks.
