According to TMW, Manchester United could agree a £6m deal for Napoli’s highly-rated forward Dries Mertens. Manager Jose Mourinho is considering a move for the 31-year-old, although Ivan Perisic of Inter Milan is still believed to be a target.
United aren’t short of options in attack with Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata in the squad, but Mertens would be an improvement. The Belgian international scored 18 goals in 38 Serie A games last season.
Mertens joined Napoli from Dutch Eredivisie PSV Eindhoven in 2013 and has gone on to make 235 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating 148 goals. The 31-year-old is one of the most prolific forwards in Serie A and could replace Anthony Martial whose Old Trafford future is uncertain this summer.
TMW say Napoli won’t let him leave the Stadio San Paolo for less than £36m which is a more than affordable asking price for United. Whether or not he wants to leave the Italian outfit for the Manchester giants is another matter, however.
Mertens isn’t getting any younger and would have a lot of competition in the United squad if he made the switch. It seems more likely he’ll remain at Napoli.
