According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United could agree a £50m deal with Bayern Munich for Jerome Boateng. The 29-year-old could be moved on from the Allianz Arena this summer with Bayern looking to sell. Boateng nearly joined Paris Saint-Germain before the deal broke down, but United are believed to be keen on his signature.
Manager Jose Mourinho has been in the market for a centre-back all summer, looking at Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld and Leicester City’s Harry Maguire. Boateng has been on their radar for some time, but no official bid has been lodged.
That could change this summer, however, as time is running out for the Red Devils to bolster their backline. United will have to act fast if they want a stellar centre-back ahead of the new season, but it’s unknown if they consider Boateng to be value for money. His advancing age means little re-sale value and only a few years of service before a natural decline will follow.
Nevertheless, the German international is one of the best defenders in Europe and has made 258 appearances in all competitions for Bayern since joining from Manchester City in 2011, winning six Bundesliga titles and three DFB-Pokals. Boateng would improve their current options but won’t come cheap.
