Manchester United could agree deal with club for £53million defender: Report

Samuel Umtiti

According to Don Balon, Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti is considering his future at the club and could move to Manchester United should the Red Devils meet his release clause.

Umtiti, contracted at the club until 2021, has made 71 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona since joining the club from Olympique Lyonnais in 2016. The 24-year-old, who has made 14 caps for the France national team, has an uncertain future due to a reported breakdown in talks over a new deal.

The centre-back has three years left on his current deal but wants a new contract as reward for his form at over the past 18 months. However, Barcelona’s offer of £7m-a-year isn’t enough to convince Umtiti to sign. This could open the door to a transfer, says the report.

Manchester United have been linked with the talented defender, who has made 17 La Liga appearances this season, for the last 12 months and his reported £53m release clause is more than affordable. Manager Jose Mourinho could be looking for a replacement for Victor Lindelof, Daley Blind and Marcus Rojo, who have hardly featured in the first-team this season.

Umtiti could potentially form a good partnership alongside Eric Bailly, but Barcelona haven’t shown a desire to sell the French defender.
