Manchester United could agree deal for 22-year-old, surprise move from Jose

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United could agree a new deal for Luke Shaw. It would come as a major surprise as the 22-year-old looked to be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer after a lack of playing time last season and a fallout with manager Jose Mourinho. However, it appears Shaw could be retained as United change their stance on signing a new left-back.

Ashley Young was first-choice last season and should keep his place in the starting lineup for 2018/19, but Mourinho could be abandoning his search for another left-back, meaning Shaw will stay as the secondary option. With Young out of contract in 2019, Shaw stands a chance of eventually replacing him in the defence if he agrees a new deal. It appears the Red Devils’ bid to sign one of Alex Sandro (Juventus) and Danny Rose (Tottenham) has failed.

Shaw was meant to be United’s long-term left-back option at the time of his signing from Southampton. The English international joined in 2014 and has made 66 appearances in all competitions, but he was given just eight Premier League starts under Mourinho last season. His young age would suggest there’s plenty of time for Shaw to develop, however, and talk of a contract extension suggests United are finally willing to give him the chance.
