According to the Mirror, Manchester United are interested in Sheffield Wednesday striker George Hirst and are close to securing a deal. Leicester City were linked but the Red Devils appear to have won the race for his signature and need to agree a fee.
The 19-year-old has been linked with a move away from Wednesday after turning down a new deal, which has also led to a lack of playing time. Hirst has risen through the youth ranks to the first-team, making a total of two appearances for Wednesday’s senior side and could now be developing at one of the best academies in the country.
Hirst could have a bright future in football if his goalscoring record on the international stage is anything to go by. The teenager has represented England at u17 (7 games, 2 goals), u18 (9 games, 4 goals), u19 (6 games, 3 goals) and u20 level (5 games, 4 goals).
He’ll be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Marcus Rashford who successfully made the transition from youth prospect to first-team player at United and could be in the England squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer. Hirst’s future may be resolved in the coming months.
