According to The Sun, Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is the subject of interest from Aston Villa and Cardiff City. The 25-year-old is expected to depart Old Trafford at the end of his contract this summer and will have his pick of clubs to choose from after impressing in the Championship.
Johnstone is a United academy graduate, but he’s failed to make a senior appearance for the Red Devils. He’s been loaned out to the likes of Oldham Athletic, Scunthorpe United, Walsall, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End and Aston Villa in a bid for competitive first-team football.
The England shot-stopper has impressed in his 18 months at Villa Park, keeping 30 clean sheets in 69 games in all competitions, which is why the Midlands outfit are so keen to make the loan deal permanent this summer. Villa have competition for his signature, however, with Cardiff also interested in Johnstone.
With the Welsh club having secured promotion to the Premier League, they can offer the United outcast top flight football next season. Villa still have a playoff final against Fulham to get past before they can offer Johnstone the same. The goalkeeper has made it clear he wants to leave United when his deal is up in the coming weeks, but his next destination is unknown.
