Man Utd’s 22-year-old defender ‘in talks’ over new long-term contract: report

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is reported to be in constant communication with manager Jose Mourinho as he aims to earn  a new long-term contract with the club.

The England international found himself out of reckoning during Mourinho’s first year at Old Trafford with the Portuguese often criticising him for his poor attitude and commitment on the playing field.

However, Mourinho’s opinion on Shaw has vastly changed since the Englishman returned to Premier League action in December 2017, and he recently dubbed him as one of the best left-backs in the country.

According to The Sun, talks are underway between Shaw and Mourinho regarding a suitable extension, and the left-back has been assured of a long-term contract, should he continue to impress for the rest of the campaign.

An Old Trafford source said: “Luke has had a series of one-on-one chats with the boss. He told him he will sanction an extended deal if he can continue to improve and make his mark.

“It’s an amazing turnaround for him after everything that’s happened. Luke is in a much better frame of mind now. He feels he has a future here despite everything that has been said and talked about.”

Shaw is currently contracted to United until 2019 after the club took the option of a 12-month extension clause, and he will now be aiming to put in consistent performances to make himself a regular ahead of veteran ace Ashley Young.

Young struggled to cope with the Spurs’ attack during the recent Premier League outing, and it would not come as a surprise, if Shaw gets the nod in the starting lineup when United host Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
