Manchester United have been embarrassed on transfer deadline day after seeing their hopes of an £18m deal for Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin crushed, reports The Sun.
The Uruguayan international has a surprisingly low release clause so United tested the waters as manager Jose Mourinho has been in the market for a stellar defender. However, the long-term Atleti man had no intention of joining the Red Devils, leaving them red-faced by the whole incident.
Mourinho failed to land the signature of any other centre-back before the summer transfer window shut, so he will go into the new season with 19-year-old Diogo Dalot being the only addition to the backline. Supporters won’t be best pleased by the news and neither will Mourinho.
United aren’t short of centre-backs, having Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly, but consistency has been a big problem.
Mourinho wants a defensive pairing he can trust over the course of the season, leading him to be linked with Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Leicester’s Harry Maguire.
It’s no surprise the Manchester giants were unsuccessful in signing Godin, but the fact they tried has led to their embarrassment.
