Manchester United ‘first’ in the race to sign £70.4m midfielder: report

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic Lazio

According to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United are ‘first’ in the race to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, this summer, despite interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City.

The 23-year-old joined Lazio from Belgian outfit KRC Genk in 2015 and has gone on to make 119 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A side, contributing 43 goals.

Milinkovic-Savic has been in fine form this season, scoring and creating 22 goals in 45 games in the Serie A, Europa League, Coppa Italia and SupperCoppa combined, hence all the interest around Europe. However, Lazio will only sell the Spanish-born Serbian international for £70.4m.

United are in desperate need for midfield reinforcements, as Michael Carrick is retiring at the end of the season to become a coach, operating within the first-team and youth sides.

The future of Marouane Fellaini remains uncertain too, with the Belgian international in talks with United over a new deal. He could still leave on a free transfer this summer if the two parties fail to come to an agreement, however.

With manager Jose Mourinho making it clear that signing a new midfielder would be a priority at the end of the campaign, the Red Devils may push on to agree a deal for the Lazio star.
