According to Le 10 Sport, Manchester United are interested in Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic. The 23-year-old has struggled for playing time under Zinedine Zidane this season, and the report claims he could exit the Santiago Bernabéu before the window shuts as a result.
Kovacic has made just six La Liga appearances for Los Blancos but has managed just one start. Instead, he’s featured more heavily in the Copa Del Rey. With Real now out of the competition, game time could allude the midfielder which is why Manchester United could capitalise on his situation.
Signed from Inter Milan in 2015, the Croatian international has gone on to make 89 appearances for Real in all competitions, but he’s never managed to hold down a starting place for a long run of games. This season, Kovacic has been behind Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in the pecking order.
Real’s woeful form hasn’t helped matters. Zidane’s side have struggled throughout the campaign, meaning he’s been reticent to bring the midfielder off the bench like he did the previous season. And with United potentially losing both Marouane Fellaini and the retiring Michael Carrick, they could test Real’s resolve.
Kovacic has a release clause of €50m, but Mourinho could negotiate a smaller fee if the player makes clear his desire to leave.
