Man United’s hopes of deal with Napoli for £43.7m defender hit stumbling block

According to The Sun, Manchester United are interested in Napoli defender Elseid Hysaj, but they have hit an obstacle as Chelsea and Liverpool are also keen to procure his signature.

The Albanian right-back has been identified as a long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia and could be on his way to Old Trafford if his £43.7m release clause is met. Hysaj joined Napoli from Empoli in 2015 and has gone on to make 131 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A side.

Napoli are currently one point adrift of defending champions and currently league leaders Juventus in the table with four games remaining and have a genuine chance of winning the title. The 24-year-old has played his part in Napoli’s success too, making 31 league appearances this season, averaging a tackle or interception every 29 minutes.

Valencia’s long-term future at United is uncertain. The Ecuadorian international has been a regular at right-back this season but could be on his way out of Old Trafford when his contract is up next year. Hysaj could be his natural replacement but he won’t come cheap.

His release clause is just shy of £44m and Napoli are unlikely to sell him for less given he’s been a first-team regular in their title pursuit.

And with Chelsea and Liverpool both looking to bring the right-back to England this summer, United have a task convincing Hysaj to reject all offers to come to Manchester.
