Manchester United identify 24-year-old replacement for Chris Smalling

According to The Sun, Manchester United are interested in Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson as a potential replacement for Chris Smalling. The 24-year-old has impressed for the Jacks this season and could be on the move to a bigger club as a result.

Signed from Barnsley in 2016, Mawson has gone on to make 65 appearances in all competitions for City. He’s played in all 32 of Swansea’s Premier League games this season, earning himself a call-up to the England national team, and has been watched by United scouts in Saturday’s draw with West Brom.

Smalling has struggled for consistency with the Red Devils, making mistake after mistake in games, and could be moved on as a result. Mawson may be the player to replace him, although it’s unknown how much United would have to pay to land his signature.

With two more years left on his deal with Swansea, the Welsh club aren’t under too much pressure to sell Mawson just yet. He’s a key player in the squad and vital to their hopes of survival this season.

With the 24-year-old having been called up by England and hoping to make the World Cup squad this summer, a move to a bigger side might keep him in the national team in the future.
