Manchester United identify £50million replacement for Paul Pogba

According to the Mirror, Manchester United are considering a move for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, with the future of Paul Pogba being uncertain this summer.

Manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly considering axing the French international after an inconsistent two years in England following his £89m move from Juventus. That would leave a void in the midfield that Fred could fill if they meet his £50m asking price.

Fred joined the Ukrainian Premier League side from Brazilian Serie A outfit Internacional in 2013 and has gone on to make 150 appearances in all competitions. The 25-year-old’s form hasn’t gone unnoticed by others, however, with Manchester City lining him up as long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

United are set to lose Michael Carrick to retirement this summer, while Marouane Fellaini will be out of contract at the end of the season, so Mourinho needs to act fast to land his transfer targets. Regardless if Pogba’s future at Old Trafford, the Red Devils may need Fred anyway to make up for the potential departures to come.

He won’t come cheap at £50m but may have the combative and industrious qualifies Pogba has been guilty of lacking this season. City’s interest could force their hand to make a bid as soon as possible.
