According to The Sun, Manchester United are interested in Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, with manager Jose Mourinho desperate to strengthen the backline this summer.
The 29-year-old, who joined Bayern from Manchester City in 2011, is one of the best centre-backs in Europe, having won five Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokals and a Champions League during his time at the Allianz Arena.
He would set clubs back £50m, although Bayern may be keen to keep him unless they have a better replacement lined up. United have stiff competition in their battle to sign him too, with Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona named as fellow suitors.
United are in need of a stellar defender due to the inconsistent form of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, while Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind have hardly featured this season. Boateng has been a regular for Bayern when fit this season, making 16 Bundesliga appearances, and could win another title as things stand.
Manchester United have the second-best defensive record in the Premier League this season (23), but goalkeeper David de Gea has been to thank for a lot of their clean sheets as his heroics have earned the Red Devils points.
