According to Rai Sport via Metro, Manchester United are eyeing Valencia defender Jose Gaya as a replacement for Luke Shaw. The Red Devils could be losing Matteo Darmian to Juventus this summer and want Gaya to compete with Ashley Young for a starting place at left-back.

Although Darmian was a right-back, he covered at left-back on occasion and will need replacing. But United also have to sign a long-term option on the left as Ashley Young will be out of contract in less than 18 months. He also turns 33 in the summer.

Gaya is the player on their shortlist, with the Valencia defender having made over 130 appearances in all competitions. The 22-year-old has been a regular at left-back this season too, racking up three assists in 25 La Liga appearances and being on the losing team just four times.

He likes to get forward and create chances but is also combative in his defensive duties. Gaya’s asking price is unknown, however. With more than two years left on his deal, coupled with being a first-team regular, Los Che will likely want a substantial bid before they consider letting him go.

Manchester United have the money to strengthen the defence, an area manager Jose Mourinho is expected to bolster this summer, so Gaya might be one player through the doors in the coming months.

  1. For United to sign Gaya, they need to let both Shaw and Darmian go and use the money to pay for him BUT United have bigger problems than just a left back, they also need a a right back (Valencia is 33 and looks frightened to go past anyone), a central defender, 2 midfielders (1 MUST be a box to box player), a winger who is not afraid to take people on and of course a striker with a near to 1 in 2 goal scoring record.
Who fits the bill, well, Meunier for the right back position, Gaya left back, Umtiti and ? as midfielders, ? as the winger and Dybala has to be the striker whatever he will cost!!!
Those to leave should be: Smalling, Darmian, Blind, Fellaini, Herrera, Ibrahimović, Sanchez and Pogba, yes even him!
Sanchez is proving to be a liability in more ways than 1 whilst Pogba just doesn’t seem to be interested and considering how much he and Sanchez are earning, time to give them the boot and take whatever is offered!

  2. United want Gaya to COMPETE with Ashley Young for a starting place at left-back. Why on Earth would Gaya want to come to United and compete with Young for first team action when he plays week in week out for Valencia’s first team? NO WONDER HE HAS RULED OUT A MOVE TO UNITED.
