Manchester United identify Liverpool midfielder as Michael Carrick replacement

Manchester United have reportedly joined Juventus in the pursuit of Liverpool contract rebel Emre Can. The 23-year-old has less than nine months left on his Reds deal, and this has drawn speculation over his future.

According to Corriere dello Sport h/t TalkSPORT, the Red Devils are monitoring the situation of Can, who is also on the radar of Serie A champions Juventus. The Bianconeri failed with an approach for the Germany international, and they are likely to revive their interest in the New Year.

Jose Mourinho has sparingly used Michael Carrick since the start of the campaign, but United are still looking into a replacement, with the veteran likely to call time on his career next summer.

Can is currently on a weekly wage of £55,000-a-week, and he is understood to have stalled on a new deal due to the Reds’ reluctance to increase his salary towards the £100,000-a-week range. The German has the tendency to pop up with long-range shot, and this combined with his tackling skills could make him a valuable first-team player at Old Trafford in the future.

Nevertheless, any deal could wait until the end of the campaign with Jurgen Klopp unlikely to entertain any exits during the winter transfer window. Can joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen more than three years ago, and he has since contributed 10 goals in over 130 appearances for the club.
